The 161st Street Business Improvement District wants to build up a stadium district in the area surrounding Yankee Stadium.
Trey Jenkins, executive director for the BID, tells News 12 he plans to bring activities, events, installations and new landscaping to Lou Gehrig Plaza. He also wants to add lighting and seating to other areas surrounding Yankee Stadium.
He says he hopes this will make Yankees fans spend more time in the neighborhood aside from going to the stadium for a game.
Some of the activities the plaza has seen that Jenkins plans to bring back this summer are concerts and movie nights. He also is working with the Department of Transportation on a potential concession stand.
“As we continue to do more activities, it creates more of a gathering place for the community, tourists or people coming to visit the area, which hopefully brings more activities to the businesses, hopefully brings in new businesses and just continues to build up the area,’ Jenkins said.
He and his team have a vision plan they will present to elected officials in the coming weeks.
