A woman in New Canaan is begging the community for assistance in helping to evacuate staffers and animals from a veterinary clinic in Afghanistan.
Cathy Kangas says she is passionate about supporting the Nowzad Dog Shelter and Clinic in Afghanistan.
She says she is working around the clock to try and get the staff and any animals to safety, raising $200,000 for a cargo plane to ship the cats, dogs, and workers out of the country - which has been in chaos since the Taliban gained control.
The clinic was started by a British marine and Kangas has been on the phone with him trying to plot an escape.
She says right now, he is holed up at the clinic, communicating with the world through social media.
Kangas says that while saving the animals is important, the most crucial thing is getting the staff -- especially the women -- out of Afghanistan.
She has reached out to elected officials including the states congressional delegation-- she says they have said they will do whatever they can to help.
