News 12 sat down with Marlon Larin, the NYPD school safety commanding officer, to learn more about the new door-locking technology and other entrance safety measures being taken in schools in the upcoming school year.

And storm watch team. Meteorologist, Alex Calamia, Alex. If folks are going out and about today for any of those winter activities, it looks like the rain is going to stop at some point. Right. Yeah. You know, I mean, but it might not be until after the day ends in a sense because sun sets before 430 now and I don't really see us getting a big break from the rain until the evening time. This is what it looks like. Right now in midtown, it's a light rain. You might actually be able to head outside without even using the umbrella. I personally have a rain jacket because I think that's kind of your best bet. This evening, we still have some sprinkles, but we are dry for a work week. I mean, I don't want to talk about the work week on a Sunday morning, but if you're looking for something positive, I've got that for you in the 10 day. Here's 9 a.m. soaker, here's lunch time, still dealing with at least light showers. You see the green is a lighter shade here so it's not as widespread. It's not as heavy of a rain. But we still have some rain at four o'clock again. It's not absolutely pouring, but it's light mist, gloomy, kind of just, you know, not good weather, but it's not going to be anything really significant as far as rainfall totals. They're very limited. So we're maybe looking at half of an inch of rain when it's all said and done. Monday morning. Lots of sunshine. Beautiful start to the day and then the clouds push in Monday afternoon and we'll have cooler temperatures. By Tuesday. We're in the upper forties now. We're in the low fifties for highs today. Not a big jump in temperature. East breeze coming in. It feels really chilly tonight. Not bad. We're in the forties again. We do have sunshine by Monday morning. So a good feel as you're getting, the kids ready for school are heading out to work. We do hit mid ff on Monday and again, no rain after today for the whole work week. So that's something to be happy about, but it will get cold Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday too, by the way, will feel like it is in the thirties.

New door-locking technology coming to NYC schools

The new door locking technology. Can you paint a picture of what that is, how it will work as well? Sure. So the program is called Safer Access. And these conversations were had actually last summer and we were discussing how do we make our school safe? Do we just lock the door and put a sign out front or do we incorporate technology? So the doe they relying now on safer access, which is the and it is a intercom style system. It has video audio capability where the agent at the front desk can see who's at the door. Once the bell is rung, they can interact with the person and allow them access. If they see fit our agents, they know the parents, they know the guardians. So we do not believe that we're going to see parents stranded outside for hours when it's not morning entry. We do believe that it is the right step to ensure that our elementary schools are the safest, that's our most vulnerable population. We're looking to start there and some of them are already up in some of our boroughs and the feedback that we're getting is mostly positive. And it also has a mechanism for our police officers, emergency responders to be able to get in if the agent or another staff member cannot to press the button to unlock the the mechanism. Why is the time now to install this technology and bring it to our schools? Well, we believe that that now is best time, especially after what we've been seeing nationwide. The shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas that shook all of us. We all read the report in the school Safety Division and we always want to learn as I stated earlier and in conjunction with the doe, we felt that this was the way to go just to slow down a threat that could try to enter the school and harm our young people. Uh We just asked the parents and the guardians to be patient with us to work with us. If they have questions, ask them, we'll be happy to walk them through it. But we don't believe that it's going to cause the disruption that some people feel or think that they're going to see to that point. What are you telling parents who might come to you with that concern? What we do is we just frame it for them conversely. Well, this is what it would look like. If somebody were to just walk in every school is engineered and designed differently, they're not all the same. So some schools, you have an agent at the top of the stairwell, sometimes it's around the corner or sometimes they're right there at the door. And really time is of the essence, when you're talking a threat, we need every second in our favor so that we may have the advantage to slow down or stop that threat. And for the most part, parents do see that it's all just a matter of adapting and adjusting. You're so used to for so many years to just walking in the door is open. You go right to where you need to go visit your principal, the school nurse, whoever. So we're just asking for just a couple of more seconds to just work with us. Hit that doorbell and you'll be allowed in. No problem. Will there be any policies or procedures that agents or school staff will also have to follow in the use of this technology? We also have our own curriculum that we're going to unveil to our entry level school safety agents in the academy now and the ones that are already deployed out at the schools that will be our in service component to just go over what steps to take, to allow somebody to get in and in the event that you don't want to let somebody in. What steps do you take when there's somebody outside that you're not certain about that are maybe not giving you the right answers. Who else do you call to that scene to help you with that? Investigation. Well, we're not going to ask parents to do is to hold their ID card up to the camera because as I said earlier, our ages know exactly who they are and we don't want to be intrusive upon them and make them feel as if they have no place in that school community, their child is there. We want them in as quickly as possible without any hindrance.
