According to a new report from the Department of Transportation, speed cameras are doing more than catching drivers and being responsible for tickets.

In the Bronx, the report revealed that the Bruckner Boulevard saw a 68% drop in speeding since the department switched to 24/7 speed camera enforcement back in Aug. 2022. On Tremont Avenue, there was a 45% reduction in injuries during overnight and weekend hours where cameras are located.

In Brooklyn, overnight and weekend speeding on Cropsey Avenue is down 84%, and on North Conduit Blvd. is down 74% since the implementation of 24/7 cameras.

Aug. 1, 2022 marked the first day of 24/7 speed camera enforcement. Prior to that day, speed cameras were only legally permitted to operate on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. In speed camera zones since that change, traffic fatalities have dropped by 25%, according to the DOT.

The DOT says that the first half of 2023 has been the safest year on-record for pedestrians, with fatalities down 20% citywide.
