Cycling advocates, the Department of Transportation and the Brooklyn borough president welcomed a new bike lane Saturday along Emmons Avenue.

The new bike lane is just the latest of several miles of greenways that surround the five boroughs. Greenways allow cyclists and pedestrians to get around more safely because they're usually separated from traffic.

“The Emmons Avenue connector is a connector between the Brooklyn waterfront greenway, which goes all the way around the borough from Greenpoint to East New York. It also connects people with the Jamaica Bay Greenway, which is a 29-mile greenway that goes all the way around Jamaica Bay and Brooklyn and Queens,” said Terri Carta of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy.

“It's a critical connector, and the only way for communities in south Brooklyn, and north Brooklyn and central Brooklyn to get to Jamaica Bay and Plum Beach and the Rockaways without going all the way around,” she said.

Greenways are also built for users to enjoy the scenery.

“It's landscaped or connected to some kind of water feature, a beach, a park or landscaping,” said Carta.

Cyclists are pleased with the addition of the new lane.

“These types of improvements are the improvements that are going to save lives overall and help us reach our Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities,” said one advocate.

The Department of Transportation and greenway advocacy groups plan to continue expanding the greenways across the city with a new $7 million grant from the federal government.
