The Bronx and city may be getting more charter schools if a new plan Governor Pataki (R-NY) is expected to unveil Tuesday is approved.
The state just recently reached its charter school cap, which means no other schools would be approved to open. According to the New York Post, Pataki has come up with a plan to grant the city power to authorize up to 50 new charter schools. The proposal would be included in the amendments he is allowed to submit with his proposed budget.
City leaders have been criticizing the governor for not allowing them enough authority to open more charter schools. Currently, only the State University of New York and the state Board of Regents can sign off on new charter schools.
