New statistics shows the number of homeless people entering shelters increased by more than 10 percent last year across the city and the Bronx. The Coalition for the Homeless says more families than ever are entering the shelter system. It blames increasing housing costs, low wages and flaws in the city?s housing stability program. City housing officials defend the program, saying since 2004 nearly 10,000 families and individuals have moved out of shelters and into their own homes through housing stability programs. They also add that less than 4 percent have returned to shelters.City housing officials say because of the program?s success, they plan to gradually decrease housing supplement portions by 20 percent each year, for the next five years. The Coalition for the Homeless are calling for an immediate suspension of the city?s rent supplement reduction.
