FDNY firefighters have more health benefits coming their way.
More 9/11-related cancers are being added to the list of illnesses covered by the World Trade Center Health Program, including uterine cancers. People who lived, worked or were first responders near ground zero can apply for both medical coverage and financial compensation. Anyone who was denied eligibility in the past, will most likely be able to re-apply
A state initiative to protect firefighters from cancer is also rolling back out after being paused by the pandemic. The program includes new decontamination protocols for firefighters exposed to harmful substances. Classes and training will now include cancer awareness and prevention education.
Starting this week, free decontamination kits and educational material will be sent out to local fire departments.
