Bronx families get a head start on the school year at News 12 backpack giveaway
Families lined up before the doors opened to receive one of more than 450 free backpacks filled with school supplies to help students prepare for the first day of class.
Hundreds of Bronx families got a head start on the school year Thursday at News 12’s annual Backpack Giveaway at the Morrisania Revitalization Corporation.
Families lined up before the doors opened to receive one of more than 450 free backpacks filled with school supplies to help students prepare for the first day of class.
The backpacks were donated by News 12, Optimum and Warner Bros. Discovery, with support from community partners including Staples, Stop & Shop, Barnes & Noble and Goya.
The event also featured food, giveaways and family-friendly activities, while connecting parents with free community resources and services.
Students of all ages — from elementary school through college — shared their excitement for the upcoming school year, with many saying they were looking forward to seeing friends, meeting new teachers and starting fresh.
The annual giveaway aims to help ease the financial burden of back-to-school shopping while ensuring local students have the supplies they need to start the school year and be ready to learn.
