The Newtown Action Alliance is joining with police departments across Connecticut for statewide gun buyback events this month.
The organization is trying to get unwanted guns out of people's homes and off the streets.
"There are homes that have guns, that people no longer have any way to secure them, or they were left by relatives in houses, and they don't know how to get rid of them,” says Chief James Viadero.
He says the statewide buyback event on Oct. 16 will be Newtown's first.
"In this community, it was never brought to light until about two years ago, and one of the biggest concerns is always finding financial backing,” he says.
Newtown Action Alliance joined with local health networks to provide funding and free safes and locks so any guns you're keeping can be secured.
“Our hospital, joined by others on this call, are going to be able to provide some of those gun safes, some of those gun locks that are going to be able to keep firearms out of the hands of children, ,” says Dr. James Dodington, an emergency pediatrician at Yale New Haven Health.
Viadero says in Newtown, gun violence prevention has a special significance.
"Our community, what they experienced, and what they're still experiencing, it's a raw emotion and it's still there, and so anything we can do to address those concerns,” he says.
Viadero says joining with partners across the state will help spread the word about the risks of unwanted or unsecured guns.
"Everybody doing it at the same time, a number of large agencies, a number of small agencies, on the same date, kind of raises the awareness level,” he says.
Gun buybacks are also coming to Guilford, Hartford and Waterbury on Oct. 16.
While the Norwalk buyback will require identification, the rest of the events are completely anonymous.
