New York state is partnering with the nonprofit Girls with Impact to provide full scholarships to its online entrepreneurship program.
The program offers online courses in STEM, MBA and entrepreneurship.
"This kind of program is probably a $2,000 program…so that's a huge savings to families,” says CEO of Girls with Impact Jennifer Openshaw. “Other girls will get it at a very, very nominal cost if they are girls of means.”
State Sen. Shelley Mayer applauded the opportunity, saying in part, “This is a leg up and a step forward.”
Alex Ciriello is an 11-year-old Ardsley Middle School student who dreams of creating a support group for people like herself who are on the autism spectrum.
"I want them to know that they're not alone, other people have struggles too,” says Alex.
Yonkers resident Jayla Thomas completed the program when she was 14. She is now a Howard University sophomore ready to launch a business using her Caribbean grandmother’s pepper sauce recipe.
"My family had the idea to make it into an actual thing…but my parents don't have that business foundation, so they don't know where to start,” says Thomas. “I do know.”
