Looking for fresh produce in the Bronx? Well now, NYC Health + Hospitals is hosting farmers markets at some of its locations.
The city identified Pelham Parkway as an area with a high need for grocery stores and supermarkets. Things have improved since then and are going to get even better, thanks to this new program.
Every Friday from outside of Jacobi Hospital, tents full of fresh fruits, veggies and homemade baked goods will be set up for members of the community. The market at Jacobi, set up by Harvest Home, also offers cooking demonstrations to teach you how to make the groceries you get.
“Like the nearest grocery store isn't until like a 20-minute walk away and, you know, it's not really accessible,” said one of the chefs at the cooking demonstration. “We have a recipe card and we do cooking demos, up to three, throughout the day… showing them how to utilize the produce and that it's not as hard as they think.”
NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln and North Central Bronx will also be doing deliveries of groceries to low-income communities.
