New York City is now joining the wave of federal agencies across the country in banning the app TikTok on government-owned devices.
Many city officials, from Mayor Eric Adams to NYPD Commissioner Eddie Caban will no longer be seen on the platform after the NYC Cyber Command says TikTok posed a security threat to the city’s networks.
All city employees are now barred from downloading the app or accessing the website on any city-owned devices. This comes after the United States mandated that all federal employees to delete the Chinese-owned social media app.
Congress, the White House, U.S. Armed Forces, and over half of the U.S. states had previously banned the platform on government devices on concerns that the app’s parent company, ByteDance, would give user data to the Chinese government.
"It’s really important that an organization like the Chinese government can't track the day to day where abouts of our politicians others like this," Dr. Justin Cappos, professor at NYU-Tandon.
News 12 reached out to the mayor’s office for a statement on this ban and is awaiting a response.
