New CDC guidance on masks in schools show additional signs of recovery from the coronavirus. However, city leaders are hesitant to follow suit.

The mayor says all students and staff will be required to wear a mask, whether or not they have received their COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC on the other hand says that if a student or staff member has gotten vaccinated, there is no need for the mask.

But Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking no chances when it comes to the health and safety of the city's students. He announced that despite the health agency's recommendations, students will continue to mask up in school buildings to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. The CDC and the city do both agree on the importance of in person learning for students.

For this reason, they city's public schools will have classes completely in-person come September. For those students and staff members that haven't received their COVID-19 vaccine, the health agency is recommending a distance of three feet be kept between everyone and those without the vaccine continue to mask up.

The CDC is also recommending that localities continue to keep an eye on numbers and data trends when it comes to COVID in their city and in school safety measures. City officials say they will be reviewing the new guidance in the coming weeks and coming out with additional information for New York City students and parents.
