In New
York City’s fight against the recent rise in crime, Mayor Eric Adams announced
gang takedowns that have helped to remove guns from the streets.
Adams
referenced four total operations that
tackled street gangs, with officials telling News 12 that these gangs were the
root of violence in their respective neighborhoods.
These
operations were conducted under the recently formed NYPD Gun Violence
Suppression Division, which identifies individuals and organizations
responsible for the trafficking and illegal sale of firearms in New York City.
Chief
of Detectives for the NYPD James Essig said that crime has dropped
significantly over the last six to eight weeks in the neighborhoods
where these operations took place. However, statistics released by the NYPD
still show a nearly 22 percent jump in crime this year compared to 2021.
Adams
also said he plans to implement more
officers and units to patrol the streets in uniform.
