Mayor-elect Eric Adams has chosen the next correction commissioner–Louis Molina, a son of the Bronx and former first deputy commissioner for Westchester County’s Department of Correction.
He is the current Las Vegas chief of police.
Molina will be tasked with fixing the troubled Rikers Island jail facility. A total of 16 inmates have died this year alone.
He says he promises to connect with unions and take a different tone than the de Blasio administration.
In a statement, the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association tells News 12 in part, “We are hopeful that incoming Commissioner Louis Molina shares those same goals. We welcome him to our agency and we look forward to working with him.”
Adams says he still plans to close Rikers Island by 2027.
