Residents in Pelham Parkway gathered Saturday in Mazzei Playground for Family Day.
Families were in line for snow cones, cotton candy while kids played in a bouncy house having a great time at the first Family Day of the season. There was even a line before the gates opened at noon.
The family-centered event is a collaboration between New York City Parks and Council Member Marjorie Velazquez.
"A moment of families to get together, enjoy the beautiful, hot weather. Kids have a blast and come together as a community," Velazquez said.
Local librarians also attended to sign people up for a library card.
Aside from the food and games, free cellphones and tablets were distributed to qualifying families.
"It's giving folks equity. When we're talking about access to cellphones and tablets, and not everybody has that opportunity, and with them being here, it allows folks to have that opportunity," Velazquez said.
The purpose of Family Day is to create a safe place for kids to come out and have fun as well as provide resources to people who live in the community.
"It's the safety of the kids, making them feel comfortable to be able to come outside and do whatever they want," said resident David Nash.
Residents said events like these are what makes their neighborhood a better place.
"If I had these opportunities, I wouldn't have to worry about anything for my kids," said resident Dave Nash.
The next Family Day will be in Throgs Neck in Fairy Point Park on May 28. The event is free for people to attend.
