New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks is set to resign from his role earlier than expected.
Banks was expected to stay for the remainder of 2024, but he is now departing on Oct. 16.
That leaves just over two weeks until his replacement, Melissa Aviles-Ramos, takes over. The Bronx native is the highest-ranking Latina and Spanish-speaking leader in New York’s public schools.
City Hall released a statement about the early resignation of Banks, saying in part, “Chancellor Aviles-Ramos is a lifelong educator and public school veteran whose talent, experience, and compassion will lead the school system well through this next chapter. We thank Chancellor Banks for his service to the city."
