New York City may be scaling back its plan to use school gyms as temporary shelters for migrants amid the weeklong protests from parents.
Parents at P.S. 189 first they learned that asylum seekers would be coming to the gym on Monday, but an abrupt announcement on that decision was overturned.
This comes as the city is set to open a new relief center in Midtown Manhattan at the Roosevelt Hotel Friday.
The hotel has been closed for nearly three years and the city says it will open gradually first to 175 families. Eventually, 850 rooms will be available for asylum seekers.
The NYPD also confirmed that it will temporarily house a number of migrants at an undisclosed facility.
