The New York City Office of Emergency Management is warning residents to stay safe from the cold weather this weekend.
The city is trying to make sure those who are vulnerable to the cold are taken care of. A Code Blue is in effect, which allows anyone who needs a warm place to seek safety in the city’s shelters.
If you see someone outside who looks like they are at risk, the city urges you to call 311 to help that person stay out of the cold.
The Office of Emergency Management also warns that colder temperatures mean a greater risk of space heater fires.
If you have to use one, the office advises you to plug them into the wall outlet and keep them away from flammable items.
Apartment buildings are required to keep the temperature inside at least 68 on cold days.
