Construction on a new affordable housing development in Fordham Heights is set to begin soon.
New York City Housing Authority Executive Vice President for Real Estate Development Jonathan Gouveia says 181 apartments will be available for rent. He also says a set will be for NYCHA residents and another set will be for homeless people.
“We’re increasing the supply of desperately needed affordable housing,” Gouveia says.
The new 14-story building called Twins Park Terrace will be built on the parking lot between East 183rd and 184th streets on Webster Avenue in front of the Twin Park West Houses.
The construction project is expected to take two years, and lottery and applications for the units will begin in fall 2022.
Twin Parks Terrace will include studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments available to low income, NYCHA and homeless residents.
The building will also include space for social services, recreation and fitness. There will also be a mural space focused on social justice.
Others who live in the adjacent Twin Parks West Houses say the new building will block and hurt parking.
NYCHA says it is aiming to have the housing project completed by spring 2023, and it is hoping to replicate it across the city.
