Police say that a person was killed and three others were injured in a Mount Eden shooting on Tuesday evening.
The NYPD held a press conference after 8 p.m. on Tuesday. They say the victims, whose ages range from 23 to 37 years old, were standing at the corner of Mount Eden and Townsend avenues at around 6:15 p.m. when they were approached by four suspects, with two suspects each sharing a scooter.
Two of the four suspects who were on the back of those scooters drove up to the four victims, pulling out guns and opening fire after traveling eastbound on Mount Eden Avenue, according to officials.
Three of the victims suffered gunshot wounds to the leg. Police say the 29-year-old man who died was shot in the chest and the leg.
The four suspects fled the scene on the two scooters heading northbound on Townsend Avenue after the shooting.
Police say they currently have one person in custody. They have not confirmed if the person in custody is directly tied to the incident.
The NYPD says that the area where this shooting took place has been a point of focus and contention for police. They say that in the last 28 days, 36 gun arrests have been made in the 44th and 46th precincts - and 18 guns were removed from the streets from April 1 to April 9.
According to NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry, efforts to remove scooters and illegal bikes off of the streets have become a top priority for the police. He says that 9,500 scooters have been removed from the streets of New York City this year, with 2,500 of those being taken in the Bronx.
Daughtry says there have been 1,300 arrests involving people using scooters to commit crimes.
No arrests have been made at this time.
