The NYPD says officers shot a 34-year-old man who was holding his mother at knifepoint.

It happened at 1740 Mulford Ave. late Thursday night.

Police say officers initially got the call for a man trying to hurt himself with a knife, but when they arrived, he was holding his 61-year-old mother at knifepoint.

Officers tried to talk him down for over two and a half minutes, while the man kept threatening to kill his mother with his arms wrapped around her neck and the knife right underneath, police say.

Police say one officer fired one round and shot the man freeing his mother, who was unharmed.

The man was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and is in critical condition.
