The NYPD gave out 500 Apple AirTags to combat a spike in car thefts throughout the city.

The giveaway event was held in a parking lot at 1998 Bruckner Blvd. in the Bronx

Cars eligible for the giveaway included Kia vehicles from 2011 to 2021 and Hyundai’s from 2015 to 2021. To qualify, cars had to have a turnkey to start and be registered in New York.

District Attorney Darcel Clark was there, assuring residents in line that the NYPD is working hard to keep their cars safe.

People at the giveaway told News 12 that the tags are desperately needed.

"I get so scared sometimes because as I am getting ready for work, I wonder if my car is going to be where I left it when I get home,” said one resident.
