The New York City Police Department has launched its Holiday Pedestrian Safety Initiative.
The initiative, which began on Dec. 14, will run through Dec. 20. Officials say the it will focus on areas surrounding senior center locations throughout New York City. They say the purpose of the proactive enforcement is to prevent injuries and create a safe environment.
The NYPD says officers will focus on the seven Vision Zero moving violations, especially failure to yield to pedestrians. Officers will be on patrol during the morning, afternoon and early evening hours, when people are walking the most.
So far this year, police say traffic fatalities have declined by more than 10 percent and pedestrian fatalities are down more than 4 percent.
