Police: Man charged in fatal Sunset Park hammer attack now heading to jail

News 12 was told Leyong Ye was first taken to the hospital for evaluation but now he is officially heading to jail.

A man charged with beating a woman and her two children with a hammer Wednesday afternoon in Sunset Park has been booked in jail.
Police say Leyong Ye, 47, has been charged with the attack. They say he lived with the victims in a shared apartment, but they were not related. Police say they arrived at the shared apartment on 52nd Street Thursday afternoon. When they got there, police say they found the 43-year-old mother Zhao Zhao and her 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.
News 12 was also told officers drove the ambulances to the hospital themselves to try and save their lives, but the mother died. The two kids are now fighting for their lives. Police say Ye was arrested Thursday after officers found him trying to leave the apartment building covered in blood. News 12 was told he was first taken to the hospital for evaluation but now he is officially heading to jail.
Ye has been charged with murder, attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. The reason for the attack is still not clear.
