A Brooklyn man is in critical condition after police say he tried to carjack an off-duty police officer in Canarsie.
News 12 is told the officer was off duty and leaving work when a man came up and tapped on the window. What unfolded next was captured on the security cameras from a nearby shopping center
Police say it happened around 2 a.m. when the 28-year-old man tapped on the off-duty officer’s window while holding a gun.
"Our member of service tried to pull off to get into a safety position, he exited his vehicle at which time our subject fired one round at our member of service. Our member of service then pulled out his firearm shooting several times striking him in the chest,” says Chief of Detective Rodney Harrison.
Harrison says they found guns and a knife on the 28-year-old. He was taken to the hospital with what appear to be life-threatening injuries, according to Harrison.
The NYPD taped off Foster Avenue between East 88th and East 83rd streets during their investigation.
Police would not give News 12 any details about the officer or where he works. They say they believe this was random.
