The NYPD officer shot three times Thursday in Cypress Hills by a man who later killed himself was released from the hospital Friday afternoon.
As News 12 has reported, Officer Hart Nguyen, 30, was responding to a report of a 29-year-old emotionally disturbed man on Ridgewood Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Officials say the man's mother called 911, telling police her son, identified as Andy Sookedo, was nonviolent and unarmed. Police say the man opened fire when Nguyen approached him in a rear bedroom of the home. Several guns were recovered from the scene.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill says Officer Nguyen was shot once in the right arm and twice in his bulletproof vest. The officer did not return fire, O'Neill says, adding that the vest saved his life.
Nguyen was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and was said to be in good spirits Thursday night. He was joined by his parents, wife and partner, Officer Kory Barrer, as he left the hospital with his arm in a sling.
O'Neill declined to speak about the shooting but praised Nguyen for his actions.
Sookedo was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when emergency responders entered the home. Several weapons were recovered from the scene.
Nguyen, a Brooklyn resident, is expected to return to the force after making a full recovery.
