The New York Police Department and the New York City Police Foundation partnered to give hundreds of turkeys away Monday night in Throggs Neck as Thanksgiving approaches.
The giveaway was set up outside the 45th Precinct, but the partnership is citywide, with over 3,000 turkeys planned to be donated across all 72 precincts in the five boroughs.
The New York City Police Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that works with the NYPD by giving it resources to connect them with the communities they serve.
"When people think about police they think about them as crime fighters, but they're also community partners," says foundation president and CEO Susan Birnbaum. "That's a strong message that's given out right now when people are really, really in need for food this year."
The line ran around the block on Barkley Avenue, with each attendee going home with a bag full of goods for Thanksgiving.
