The NYPD is ramping up patrols this holiday season to ensure shoppers feel safe.
Adeel Rana is the commanding officer of the NYPD's 84th Precinct, which is near one of the largest shopping districts in Downtown Brooklyn.
"The main thing is, we want to make sure people know. You see the NYPD officers out here in front of the stores around the corner, patrolling the streets on foot or in a vehicle to make sure people can come here safely," says Rana.
Rana says it is always important to show the community that police officers are there to ensure their safety.
Rana also asks community members that if they see something, they should say something. He says a big thing now is pickpocketing. Rana says they often go out in teams so that one person can distract the target while the other steals items from the victim.
Rana hopes with more officers on patrol people will feel safer.
"Come out, take advantage of the deals, and the NYPD will be here to make sure you don't have to worry about that portion of safety. We'll make sure you're safe so that you can freely and happily shop," says Rana.
This year, there will be police in uniform, patrol cars and public safety teams in unmarked vehicles collaborating with security officers on duty at area stores.
