The NYPD is making efforts to recruit more women into its elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU).

Around 30 female officers attended a special boot camp at Floyd Bennett Field on Thursday.

The boot camp provided officers a glimpse of the physical and mental challenges required to be part of the highly specialized unit.

Currently, fewer than 10 women serve in the ESU, which has nearly 280 officers. The department acknowledges the lack of female representation and is working to change that by offering opportunities like this boot camp.

"This is a male-dominated field. So, it's nice to have the opportunity, being a woman, to show that we're just as strong, just as determined," said NYPD officer and professional boxer Nisa Rodriguez, who aspires to join the ESU.

The initiative aims to increase female presence in roles that often involve high-stakes situations like rescues and barricades, where women officers may bring a different perspective.
