The NYPD released new body camera footage of a police-involved shooting that occurred on Dec. 4, 2022.

Officers say they were pursuing 39-year-old Daniel Rivera on foot near 161st Street and Summit Avenue. They say he allegedly stole a car and was armed.

A police officer shot once at Rivera after spotting him. He then fled into the woods. Additional officers responded to the scene and found Rivera rising from the ground while still armed.

Five different officers shot 29 shots at Rivera. He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln and pronounced dead a day later. The NYPD recovered two guns at the scene and started an investigation.

A year later, police say they're continuing to investigate what happened and once the investigation is complete, evidence will be shown to the first deputy commissioner's use of force review board. They will determine if the use of force was indeed justified and within department guidelines.
