The NYPD honored the legacy of the late Detective Miosotis Familia, who was killed on July 5, 2017 while on duty in the Bronx.
Community members and officers gathered outside of the 46th Precinct on Wednesday to celebrate Familia’s life. She was fatally shot while working in a mobile command center in Fordham.
Genesis Villela is Familia’s oldest daughter and says she lost her best friend on that tragic day.
“Not only has my mother’s death been the most traumatic thing I’ve ever had to endure in my entire life, a part of me died that day,” said Villela.
Familia’s children say they are still fighting to get legislation passed that would allow them to access their late mother’s pension, hoping that other kids who lose their parents in the line of duty don’t have to deal with the same issue in the future.
