NYPD report raises questions in the Bronx
A new report by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) shows African-Americans make up more than half the amount of people stopped by police.Four times a year, the NYPD releases a compiled report to the City Council regarding its ?Stop and Frisk? practice. The report indicates information on the people they stop and why. The report reveals that more than 5,000 people were stopped on the city streets last year. It goes on to say that more than 50 percent of those stopped were black. NPYD officials note that 68.5 percent of crimes last year were committed by people described as ?black? by their victims. The report also notes that the average arrests per quarter have doubled and that five times the amount of summonses were given out last year. The police commissioner maintains that officers stop people based on reasonable suspicion, not personal bias.
