The NYPD announced a significant drop in crime for the second month of 2025, including a record-breaking decrease in shooting incidents.
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says crime across the city has fallen by 14.5%, compared to the same period in 2024, with notable reductions in transit crime, down 15.1% after increased police presence on train platforms and stations.
Shootings citywide have decreased by over 20%, marking a historic low.
Despite the overall drop, rape incidents were the only category to see a rise, up 21.7%.
The NYPD attributes this increase to the recent broadening of the legal definition of rape in New York State.
Tisch emphasized that the department remains committed to making the city safer by addressing the needs of local communities and deploying resources where they are most needed.
