The NYPD says a man was fatally shot Friday during an encounter with police in Hunts Point.

Police say NYPD detectives and narcotics officers were investigating an unrelated incident on Seneca Avenue when a plain clothes officer heard a dispute around 7 p.m. They say the officer overheard the suspect say he was going to a car to grab a gun.

News 12 was told police at the scene approached the suspect who they say was seen with a weapon in hand.

Police say the officers warned the suspect to put down his weapon, but he ignored the warning, then opened fired at them and nearly struck an officer in the head.

Officers returned fire and shot the suspect five times. He later died at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.

Police say the suspect has an extensive criminal record with 10 arrests, seven felonies and a felony for assault.

Police say recovered the suspect's gun. The suspect's identity has not yet been released.

It's also still unclear what prompted the dispute.
