The NYPD is asking for the public's help to track down an Uber Eats employee who they said stole a purse with $10,000 inside.
Officials said the incident happened Sept. 13 at an apartment building near Haviland and Olmstead Avenues in Union Port.
“If it happened to me, I don’t know how I would react,” said one resident, who only identified himself as Ayo. “That [security] video is something else.”
Surveillance video showed the brazen burglar riding up to the building on a bike and walking through the lobby around 3 a.m. with food in-hand.
Police said the suspect left the food at the first-floor apartment door, but the 27-year-old victim requested that the order be delivered through the window.
The video showed the cyclist making a pitstop on his way out and appearing to steal the bag full of cash from the windowsill.
“I’m not surprised because it’s very unsafe at night around here,” said neighbor Lesa Harriott.
Uber released the following statement: “We have no tolerance for this kind of behavior. We’ve removed the courier account’s access to the uber platform and are continuing to look into this further. We have reached out to the NYPD to offer our assistance in their investigation.”
Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
