Police say a woman was slashed across her face at the Fordham Road subway station just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers say she was waiting on the northbound D train platform when she was attacked after a disagreement with a man who was allegedly panhandling inside of the station.
The attacker reportedly then fled toward Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse.
As for the victim, she is now in the hospital.
News 12 spoke to a woman who says she was the one who was attacked. She didn't want to speak on camera says that she was with her boyfriend at the time of the attack and that he may have been panhandling. She also said that she didn’t do anything to provoke the fight, and that the man who attacked her was with a woman. She claims she had to get stitches on her face.
The recent rise of subway violence has been a major concern for commuters and city officials in recent months. Police statistics show that current transit crime is up 70% compared to this time last year.
The mayor rolled out a Subway Safety Plan last month saying police officers would be dispatched to subway stations to enforce rider rules, such as no panhandling or sleeping on subway seats.
Early morning commuters tell News 12 they are even more nervous about taking the train now.
