Use those gift cards - that's the message from the Office of the New York State Comptroller, after recovering $21 million in unclaimed funds last year from unused gift cards alone.

It will be sending out checks soon - for up to $250 - to people entitled to the money.

New York City has the largest amount of unclaimed funds from gift cards, at over $48 million.

The Comptroller's Office set up a website where people can search to see if they have any lost money. You can visit it here.
