4h agoOfficials say New York City can expect an influx of migrants after Title 42 expires Wednesday.
Title 42 is the public health order issued under the Trump administration that prohibited migrants from entering U.S.-Mexican border.
A Republican-led effort to continue the policy was denied in a U.S. federal appeals court on Friday.
With New York City being a sanctuary city, an influx of migrants is expected to arrive once Title 42 expires.
Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement that, "Beginning today, we should expect an influx of busses coming from the border and that more than 1,000 additional asylum seekers will arrive in New York City every week."
Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition Murad Awawdeh says federal aid is really what the city needs.
"Today, there were three busses that showed up. There are more busses that are anticipated coming into the city. We just want to make sure that we are prepared as a city collectively, and really want to make sure that the federal government steps up and leads in this moment, but also provide financial support for the city to meet this moment, as well as this state," Awawdeh elaborated.
Republicans have confirmed that on Monday they will appeal this decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, as many are unhappy with the discontinuation of the policy.
