Firefighters and local officials are fighting to keep a Woodlawn firehouse open.
Woodlawn?s Community Board president fears Ladder 39 is next on the chopping block. He says the building conditions are poor and it is a dangerous facility to work in. A new study by Senator Jeffrey Klein?s (D-BX) office shows the city cannot afford to lose a single firehouse. The study finds that even though the city saves money by closing firehouses, the time it takes to respond to fires increases.
Klein says the increased response times put the lives of many residents at risk. He along with other officials are urging Mayor Bloomberg to reconsider closing firehouses throughout the city and the Bronx.
