A
Bronx police recruit died Wednesday morning after having a medical episode at an NYPD shooting range, according to department officials.
Authorities have identified the 33-year-old victim as Edgar Ordonez, a probationary police officer set to graduate next Monday.
Around 11:30 a.m., police say the recruit was found unconscious and unresponsive at Rodman’s Neck on City Island. Police say he was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi where he was pronounced dead.
The NYPD posted a video to ‘X’ showing the victim’s body being transferred on a stretcher. His family was present, and officers lined the street saluting the fallen recruit.
Local leaders have since shown support for the victim's family. Borough President Vanessa Gibson shared her condolences on ‘X’ writing, “We send our thoughts and prayers of comfort, healing and strength to his family and friends.”
Mayor Adams also sent out prayers writing, “The loss of a dedicated public servant is a reminder of just how dangerous this heat can be.”
Medical examiners are working to determine the exact cause of Ordonez’s death.
