One of Broadway's most iconic characters has a new actor portraying the role in the musical “Chicago,” and he's a familiar voice in New York theater.
James Monroe Iglehart has stepped into the shoes of Chicago's Billy Flynn, the charismatic defense attorney.
Iglehart, perhaps best known for originating the role of the Genie in Disney's "Aladdin" on Broadway, for which he received a Tony Award, says tackling the role of Flynn brings back memories of when he first saw the musical on tour.
Set in 1920s Chicago, the plot revolves around accused killers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, desperate for media attention, and the sensationalism that follows.
Chicago first opened on Broadway back in 1975. This revival has been running for 25 years.
"It seems like no matter where we are in American culture there is always something happening that reminds you of the plot of Chicago,” says Iglehart.

The new role for Iglehart comes with a new outlook on his health.
"My family was very supportive about it,” says Iglehart. “So I have no problems telling people that I have Type 2 diabetes and my friends help me watch what I eat.”
Iglehart will appear in the production through March 13.
"Chicago" is among the Broadway shows participating in a two for one ticket special as part of Broadway Week for performances through Feb 13.
