A funeral was held on Long Island for William Moon II, the FDNY firefighter who died of injuries sustained during a training exercise at a Brooklyn firehouse.
Thousands of firefighters gathered to bid farewell to Moon at Saint Patrick's Church in Bay Shore.
Capt. Pat Connolly, of the FDNY, described Moon as "one of the best people who's ever put on this uniform, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart."
"This death is a tragedy," said Andrew Ansbro of the FDNY. "We train constantly so that we can do a difficult and dangerous job and even our training is dangerous. We don't expect to lose someone this way, but it is the nature of what we do. Everything we do is dangerous."
Moon was remembered as a loving husband and father of two who also previously worked at the Islip Fire Department on Long Island.
His organs were donated and saved the lives of two New York City firefighters.
