Students in Brooklyn homeless shelters are getting a helping hand to prepare for the new school year thanks to the Operation Backpack Giveaway.

Children living at the Legacy Family Residence in Flatlands received free backpacks, supplies and lunch at the annual event hosted by Volunteers of America-Greater New York.

"It's just incredible to see not only the excitement for the kids but the relief for the parents and for teachers. You know, the cost of school supplies is going up," said Rochelle Heinrichs, the assistant vice president of marketing and communications for Volunteers of America-Greater New York.

They say their mission is to ensure every child residing in a New York City homeless or domestic violence shelter has the tools they need to succeed. The organization is carrying out the work with help from Council Member-elect Chris Banks.

"It's a great thing. Volunteers of America have been doing this a long time and they're well known with helping out with the community as well. So, we're clients here at the shelter and it's a great thing," said Kelly, a mother who was grateful for the help.

Their next destination to give away bags and supplies to children is a shelter in Bushwick on Tuesday.

According to the Department of Homelessness Services, there are currently more than 29,000 children living in homeless shelters across the city. The organization says their goal is to make the transition back to school easier for them.
