Over $30 million is due to be invested in pavement restoration projects for five state roads in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the $30.6 million project Friday for a total of 20 miles in Long Island roads.
Suffolk and state leaders say they were initially told the roadway repairs were projected to be completed by 2023-2024 and that's unacceptable.
However, after Cuomo's announcement they learned that the repairs are scheduled for later this year and expected to be completed by 2022.
Legislator Nick Caracappa says, "I think he's doing the right thing but from what I hear it's still not enough money, still not enough roadway and it's still not enough time. It's too much time to get done and we don't have that kind of time."
The first project is already underway on Glen Cove Road between Helen Street and Cedar Swamp Road (State Route 107) in the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay. Officials say 2 inches of fresh asphalt will replace pavement and new reflective lane markings will be installed, along with curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Storm drains will also see repair work.
Long Islanders say they hope the repairs can get done quickly because the potholes are not only an inconvenience but are also a matter of safety.
Projects that will take place between now and next year include:
- Jericho Turnpike (State Route 25) from the Nassau/Suffolk border to Deer Park Road (Suffolk County Route 35) in the Town of Huntington.
- State Route 112 between Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Expressway, Town of Brookhaven.
- State Route 27A (Main Street/Montauk Highway) between State Route 111 (Islip Avenue) and Sunrise Highway, Town of Islip.
- Middle Country Road (State Route 25) between Terry Road and State Route 347, Town of Smithtown.
- State Route 27 between South Etna Avenue and the Montauk Point Lighthouse, Town of East Hampton.
