When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down barbershops and hair salons, a former barber decided to pursue his passion by creating a shop-on-wheels.
Bronx Loyal Mobile Barber not only brings the barbershop to customers, but it passes the skill of cosmetology onto the next generation.
Gary Chimelis has been cutting hair since he was 15 years old. After he lost his job in hospitality due to the pandemic, Chimelis decided to get back to his roots.
He bought a van in June 2021, remodeled the inside himself and has been running his own shop on wheels since August. However, he says the most important work he does is using his skills to give back.
Twice a month, he gives out free haircuts to those in need and he even teaches high school students how to cut hair.
For those looking to book an appointment, Chimelis says not to worry as he can either come to customers or they can simply stop by his van.
