Parents and community members came together Friday in hope of doing something about the recent trend of guns being found at public schools in New York City.
The New York City School Safety Coalition held a press conference Friday afternoon at the New Roots Community Farm. It's just across the street from Mott Haven Campus High School, one of five public schools around the city where a student had a gun confiscated by safety officers this past week.
The gun at the Mott Haven campus was found during random scanning on Wednesday - the same day that guns were also found at Adlai Stevenson in the Bronx, and FDR High in Brooklyn.
On Thursday, two more guns were found - one at Herman Ridder Jr. High in the Bronx, and the other at Van Buren High in Queens. A total of five guns in only two days, and two of those guns were loaded, officials say.
The Safety Coalition along with a group of what they call "concerned mothers and citizens" came with a few action items:
1. Asking for screenings to be conducted at every school
2. More metal detectors to be installed by the DOE
3. More school safety agents to be hired
School safety agents already started the year stretched thin, and then the group was cut even more following the city's vaccine mandate with about 1,800 of them reportedly going on unpaid leave instead of getting the shot.
