Parents are getting the chance Tuesday to weigh in on the issue of social promotion at a town hall meeting hosted by the Department of Education.
Social promotion is the practice of passing students even if they aren't academically ready. Four years ago, Mayor Bloomberg got rid of social promotion for third-graders and now wants to do the same for eighth-graders.
Bloomberg says if students are going to succeed in high school and in the competitive world, they have to have the basics from their education.
