Parkchester condo installs public emergency button to help protect residents

The Parkchester Condominiums recently installed a new security system in the case of emergencies.
The so-called “blue light emergency system” is located near Virginia and McGraw avenues.
It can be activated by pushing the red “Emergency” button, which then connects with first responders through the intercom.
“I do find it to be helpful,” said Georgia Nnaoyola, of Parkchester. “I definitely think we need more of them in the community.”
“I think it’s a great idea, and I think this is actually really helpful,” said Karin Tifa, of Parkchester.
Simona, a volunteer with the Parkchester Watch Group that advocates for residents, said they have been raising safety concerns for years, and the new system can protect people from violent crime.
“I hope that this will allow individuals to get help faster,” Simona said. “Hopefully, it will help either deter or prevent crimes happening.”
The new installation comes after a 21-year-old man was arrested in December for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on Virginia Avenue.
According to the NYPD’s latest crime stats, reported rape incidents are up nearly 20% citywide compared to this time last year.
Those same statistics show that reported rapes within the 43rd Police Precinct - which includes Parkchester - are up 118% year to date.
“Things like [the emergency system] I do appreciate, the community working towards,” Nnaoyola said. “I wish it was done sooner, and I definitely will advocate that they should install more of these.”
“I feel like there is progress, however, there needs to be a lot more progress,” said Tifa.
News 12 reached out to Parkchester management for comment about the new emergency system and to ask whether there are plans to install more of them. As of Tuesday night, management has not responded.
